The Far Freedom Universe (FFu)
The FFu
The FFu has two levels. The level we experience is the subjective universe. It is contained within an objective universe, designated the super universe. The super universe contains an infinite number of subjective universes. We will return to this idea later.
Quantum Circuits and Surface Entities
The pattern produced by iron filings in a magnetic field allows us to see the loop of force that exits at one pole of the magnet and enters at the other pole. In the FFu the loops are called circuits and the agent of force is called a quantum. A quantum circuit is a loop with a circulating packet of vibrations that performs all the push-and-pull of the FFu. The loops are attached to entities, and to the rest of the universe by chains of quantum circuits called quantum pathways.
The other basic class of physical phenomenon is called a surface entity. Most surface entities are hollow topological spheres. All other surface entity topologies are considered exotic or hypothetical. Entities have single quantum circuits attached normal to their poles - they define the poles - and these orbital quantum circuits appear to enter the entity at one pole and exit at the other. Since all naturally occurring surface entities are subatomic in size, their orbital circuits are the effectors of all nuclear forces.
If we could look at the cross section of a segment of a quantum circuit it would appear to be a hollow tube. It is not a tube but a tunnel. All matter is a discontinuity: tunnels and bubbles of nothingness within the somethingness of space.
The
Super Universe
If all matter was removed from the real universe, would the properties of time and dimension remain in the void? The FFu's super universe contains an infinite number of static universes. Time does not exist in them because they are all static. They possess dimension only because they contain quantum circuits. The super universe allows us to experience time by the mysterious condition called being alive. We pass through infinite numbers of static universes as a non-corporeal being following multiple paths provided by the positions of our bodies in each universe. This has the subjective effect of showing motion and dimension, much as cinema takes advantage of persistence of vision to make us believe the motion is continuous in a movie.
In the super universe - objectively - an instant is a sequence of two static universes. Subjectively - as a living observer - if two or more surface entities have zero relative motion for an instant, then for that instant the entities will attain a state called positional identity. To the super universe they are in the same place during the sequence. To us they remain in separate locations, but their orbital quantum circuits change. A natural surface entity (a subatomic particle) is always a closed entity. The interior is a privileged area, a part of the super universe. Position has no meaning in the super universe. This is a clue to the dimensional compression of infinite static universes.
The Speed of Light
The correct phrase is the speed of information, and it is subjective. In the FFu everything is information. The speed of information is infinite but for factors that retard the speed. The factor that retards speed is called reluctance. Quantum circuits are discontinuities in a medium. They are a binary transition from somethingness to nothingness to somethingness. There is an interface that provides a barrier. The interface provides reluctance. Since quantum circuits pervade space and must move with an entity to which they are attached, then they must also cross other circuits as they move. They are reluctant to merge with each other as they cross, and perhaps reluctant to separate once they have merged. To avoid merging, quantum circuits will push each other; however, if the geometry of the collision is steep enough the circuits will merge and may also rupture, releasing their quanta of energy. The information that is a radio broadcast signal in our solar neighborhood is an extended spray of quantum circuits called quantum pathways that must shove their way through a maze of other quantum pathways to reach a receiver. Its speed is retarded and its energy is dissipated in its competition with other information. Remove all competition and speed would be infinite.
With enough energy, quantum circuits can be merged into ever longer loops to form circuit pathways that span interstellar and intergalactic space. These conduct the information we call starlight. Quanta traverse the circuits at near infinite velocity. This is not to say we should be able to communicate in real time between two places in deep space where there is low signal competition. You must first build or borrow a quantum pathway: a setup interval which should still be quicker than within planetary space. If your quantum pathway can be protected from disruption by other pathways, then your signal will proceed at infinite velocity. In planetary space the setup speed will be retarded by too much pathway competition for the initial signal to become noticeable instantly. Again, the quantum pathway must be protected from interference, which means it can't be a broadcast signal but a coherent, highly collimated beam. How, then, do you modulate a coherent beam without interrupting it or otherwise exposing it to retardation? The FFu doesn't offer a practical solution to signal delay along this line of approach.
Starlight Drive
In the FFu, in the great gulfs between stars, starships generate an exotic surface entity commonly called a drive envelope. It is a curved topology that approaches being a common spherical surface entity, except that it's large enough to surround the ship. It does not, however, completely surround the ship. In one small area there is an imperfection (the heading notch) from which quantum circuits are able to attach the ship to the rest of the universe, favoring the direction in which the ship needs to travel. The ship is pulled in that direction quite rapidly, as almost all of its mass is hidden from the universe by its drive envelope. The speed is only limited by whatever reluctance its heading notch and drive envelope encounters while slipping though the quantum pathways of starlight. There are other factors which affect speed, mainly those pertaining to the surface density of the drive envelope, the on-off ratio of its duty cycle, and the effectiveness of its point of connection to the heading. The effects of massive acceleration and the hazards of radiation and other debris impact are all negated by the drive envelope. Relativistic effects, if they exist and because they would be related to the unknown value of c, remain an unproven theory in the FFu.
Discontinuous Travel and the Identity Principle
The objective and subjective universes are by nature discontinuous. It is only the living path that is continuous. Gates, jumpships, and transmats appear to be discontinuous means of shifting the living path. Objectively, they work by connecting an exotic entity in one static universe to a congruent entity in another static universe. Subjectively, they work by creating a very large spherical entity. As with the heading notch of a starlight drive envelope, the entity is not perfect in shape. Where the orbital quantum circuit exits normal to the north pole of the entity there is a dimpled area that can be configured to aim the orbital quantum circuit. This affects its length and in a sense makes it a vector that points at the intended destination. Subjectively speaking, it seems the universe requires a second congruent entity to simultaneously create itself along this vector at the destination location, then complete the loop back to the opposite pole of the source entity. It seems the binary nature of reality requires symmetry of creation. Said in another way, the universe requires at least two members of the same entity class to attain zero relative motion at least once each instant of time. In the objective universe there are an infinite number of static universes, at least two of which will have the required congruent entities. Your living path must arrive at the proper static universe that connects to the destination static universe, each having congruent exotic entities. Subjectively, whatever information is enclosed by one entity will trade places with the information in the other entity.
Transmat vs Gate
Transmats are ancient alien technology not understood by 27th-century FFu science, even though atomic-scale manufacture allows them to be replicated. Scientists who know of gates assume some kind of gate is used in a transmat. It may not be clear in the story, but transmats are more sophisticated than gates. The sophistication of transmats lies in their reference fields that can precisely define what matter is to be transmitted, and in their ability to probe their destination and deliver their matter in conformity to conditions there. Transmats are limited in range by their requirement for a processing interval. The object to be transmatted is seized by a reference field to identify the target matter, which is then disassembled at subatomic scale into a stream that is pumped through a small gate. This explanation is only one theory of how transmats work. Humans did not invent them but were only just smart enough to duplicate them from remnant technology of precursor alien civilizations.
Gates are the stationary version of jumpships. They have unlimited range, assuming you can survive where your vector dumps you. They take a spherical volume and exchange it with another spherical volume at the destination. Gates are inherently dangerous. Anything at the perimeter of the spheres will be cut. Anything at the destination will be returned to the origin. If the gate is Point A, and you want to move matter from Point B to Point C, it must go through Point A. The mathematics required for computing a destination vector is daunting. The machinery required is massive and extremely precise. And the universe doesn't sit still while you compute your address.
